Some mock Diaorama’s created using various thickness’ of card. I became interested in the use of collaging sillhoette’s to begin with, which was meant to be the over-all outcome. However I’d been itching for the chance to try some art direction. Problems emerged almost immediately as trying to get large scale pieces of paper to stand up straight without pieces of card or wire is near impossible.

Right at this point, I found out that Doctor of dioramas, Su Blackwell was doing a talk at Bath Spa lecture theatre. I then sat through an arduous hour and a half where the lecturer was scared stiff and almost reduced to tears on a few occasions. At the end she asked politely if anybody would like to ask questions. Somebody finally asked her how she made them stand up on their own, she replied, Im afraid thats my secret. So time wasted there, however I have discovered my own way. so how do you like that?! Part of the final imagery for London show in the Dray Walk Gallery. Much of the influence from this project came from old hip hop flyers dated from the mid 70′s onwards. Most of the flyers were designed by Buddy Esquire and Phase 2. The general aesthetic of these posters/flyers was very geometric framing, with typography that didn’t match up. Collages of the musician were usually the centralized focus of the image. All of these flyers would have been made by hand using letter transfers, wax machines, exacto knives etc.

The aim of this project was to pay homage to the artists that formed the backbone to hip hop culture, while remaining true to the oldskool flyers in terms of design.

the idea was to create a set of images of musicians who have influenced and changed hip hop music culture over the years. Some to include grandmaster flash, nas and biggie smalls, to name a few.

in short, this image was designed as a lecture poster for Andy Martin. The lecture was held at Bath spa university. The inspiration for this image came from a promotional piece of Andy’s named ‘ The ram with the golden gun’.
